I recently led a photography workshop at Lake Temescal in Oakland, bringing together a group of photographers for a spring morning of hands-on learning and creative exploration. With eight participants in the group, I was able to spend time working individually with photographers while we explored the variety of subjects found around the lake.
Lake Temescal is a great location for photography because it offers a changing mix of landscapes, reflections, wildlife, trees, and natural details. During the workshop, we completed a single lap around the lake, taking time to observe the environment and look for photographs that might otherwise be missed.
Learn Digital Photography Through Hands-On Experience
One of my goals when leading a workshop is to help participants learn digital photography by using their cameras in real-world situations. Photography is more than understanding technical settings. Learning how aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focus, and composition work together becomes much easier when you can experiment with them while photographing an actual subject.
As we walked around the lake, I encouraged participants to slow down and consider the light, background, composition, and perspective before pressing the shutter. Small changes in position or camera settings can make a significant difference in the final image.
Get Great Photos From Your Camera
You do not need to travel far from home to get great photos from your camera. Locations throughout Oakland and the East Bay offer outstanding opportunities to practice photography and develop a stronger visual eye.
At Lake Temescal, reflections on the water created opportunities for landscape photography, while birds and other wildlife gave participants the chance to practice timing, focus, and exposure. The variety of subjects also encouraged everyone to think creatively and try different approaches with their cameras.
Instruction for Novice Photographer and Growing Skills
My workshops are designed to provide practical instruction for novice photographer participants as well as guidance for photographers who want to become more comfortable with their cameras. I believe that smaller groups create a better learning experience because I can spend more time answering questions and offering individual suggestions.
Whether someone is just beginning to explore photography or wants to improve their ability to learn digital photography, hands-on instruction can help build both technical knowledge and creative confidence.
This photography workshop at Lake Temescal was a reminder of how much photographic opportunity exists throughout Oakland and the East Bay. My goal is always to help participants better understand their cameras, develop their individual style, and leave with the confidence to get great photos from their camera wherever they choose to photograph.
