Along the Leona Heights trail in the Oakland hills, I led a photography workshop, exploring one of the more unusual and historically interesting landscapes in the East Bay. The area around the former Leona Heights sulfur mines offers a striking combination of steep hillsides, wooded canyon scenery, exposed earth, rock formations, and reminders of the area’s mining history.
The landscape at Leona Canyon Park feels surprisingly remote considering its location in Oakland. The trail passes through a deeply cut canyon surrounded by trees and steep slopes, while the former mining area reveals exposed and altered sections of the hillside. This contrast between natural vegetation and the remnants of historic mining activity creates an interesting environment for photographers looking for texture, color, patterns, and detail.
Learn Digital Photography in a Unique East Bay Landscape
One of the goals of every photography workshop I lead is to help participants learn digital photography through direct, hands-on experience. Instead of simply talking about camera settings, I encourage photographers to experiment with their cameras while working with real subjects and changing conditions.
At Leona Heights, the group had opportunities to photograph landscapes, trees, textures, rock formations, and details within the canyon. We discussed composition, exposure, focus, and how changes in camera position can completely alter the way a scene is photographed.
Get Great Photos From Your Camera
You do not have to travel far to get great photos from your camera. Locations throughout Oakland and the East Bay provide excellent opportunities to practice photography and develop a stronger eye for composition.
During this workshop, I encouraged participants to slow down and look beyond the obvious view. Interesting photographs can often be found in small details, changing light, unusual textures, and the relationship between different elements in the landscape.
Instruction for Novice Photographer and Creative Growth
I design my workshops to provide practical instruction for novice photographer participants while also giving more experienced photographers opportunities to explore new techniques and creative approaches. Small-group instruction allows me to spend time with individual participants, answer questions, and offer guidance based on their experience and the photographs they want to create.

This photography workshop in Oakland’s Leona Heights area was a great reminder that some of the most interesting photographic locations can be found close to home. By exploring the East Bay with a camera and taking the time to observe, experiment, and ask questions, photographers can build the confidence to get great photos from their camera in almost any environment.
