The result of a referral, I had the opportunity to photograph a professional headshot and business portrait for a client in San Francisco. The session took place at Sue Bierman Park on the Embarcadero, providing a relaxed outdoor environment with natural light and the visual character of the city as part of the setting.
The client came to me as a referral from a property manager I had photographed for several recent projects. Referrals are always meaningful to me because they reflect the trust clients place in my work and the relationships I build through photography.
For this session, my goal was to create a professional business portrait that felt approachable, natural, and appropriate for a variety of professional uses.
Creating a Professional Headshot With Natural Light
Natural light can be an excellent starting point for a headshot, particularly when working outdoors in a location with open shade and soft, even illumination. However, natural light does not always provide everything needed for a finished professional portrait.
Although this was primarily a natural-light environment, I used a speedlite flash at low power to gently fill some of the shadows. The additional light helped balance the exposure while preserving the natural appearance of the location.
My approach is always to use lighting in a way that supports the subject without making the photograph look overly produced. For a business portrait, subtle adjustments to light can help create a polished and professional result while maintaining a relaxed and authentic appearance.

A professional portrait can be used in many ways, from company websites and marketing materials to speaker profiles and social media. Tasteful Retouching for a Natural Appearance
Post-production is an important part of creating a finished professional portrait. My approach to tasteful retouching is focused on refinement rather than dramatic changes.
I may reduce temporary blemishes, soften distracting shadows, remove small visual distractions, and make subtle adjustments to the overall image. At the same time, I want the person in the photograph to look like themselves.
Whether the final image is used as a LinkedIn photo, on a company website, or in professional marketing materials, a successful business portrait should feel confident, approachable, and authentic.
