Sports Photography with the Oakland Ballers

by | Aug 31, 2026 | photography, sports

On August 23 and August 30, 2026, I had the opportunity to photograph the Oakland Ballers at Raimondi Park in West Oakland as part of a credentialed sports photography team with Darrell Lavin of @doclavinphoto. Covering the August 23 matchup against the Modesto Roadsters and the August 30 game against the Long Beach Regulators gave me two exciting opportunities to focus on the speed, intensity, and personality that make baseball such a compelling subject.

For me, sports photography is about more than documenting what happened during a game. My goal is to create images that capture the energy of the moment, from the concentration of a batter waiting for a pitch to the split-second reaction of a player making a difficult play. The best action photos tell a story without needing much explanation.

Capturing Baseball Photos and Action Photos

Photographing baseball requires constant attention. The action can change instantly, and anticipating the next play is an important part of creating strong baseball photos. I worked to capture players at the plate, on the bases, in the field, and reacting to key moments throughout both games.

A successful collection of game photos should show more than individual players. I also look for the interaction between teammates, coaches, and fans, along with the details that communicate the atmosphere of the ballpark. These moments help build a more complete visual story of the game.

As a freelance photographer working in the Bay Area, I enjoy assignments that require both technical preparation and quick decision-making. Sports move fast, and there is rarely an opportunity to recreate an important moment. Being ready with the right camera position, lens, and exposure settings makes it possible to concentrate on timing and composition.

Oakland Baseball and the Resurgence of West Oakland

Photographing the Oakland Ballers at Raimondi Park also offered a chance to experience the continuing energy and resurgence of West Oakland. The neighborhood is seeing renewed activity, with destinations such as Prescott Market contributing to a growing sense of community and investment in the area.

Raimondi Park has become an important gathering place where baseball, local culture, and community come together. That made these assignments about more than simply producing baseball photos. They were also an opportunity to document a distinctly Oakland experience.

Working alongside Darrell Lavin, @doclavinphoto, was an excellent experience and a reminder of the collaborative side of professional sports photography. From fast-moving action photos to memorable game photos, photographing the Oakland Ballers allowed me to document the excitement of baseball while capturing another chapter in the continuing story of Oakland and the Bay Area.
