My recent photography workshop in Oakland’s Uptown gave participants an opportunity to explore one of the East Bay’s most visually interesting urban neighborhoods while developing their camera skills and creative approach to photography. We began on a Sunday morning at Frank Ogawa Plaza and spent time walking through the surrounding streets, paying close attention to architecture, light, texture, patterns, and the details that can easily be overlooked when moving through the city too quickly.
This photography workshop was designed to encourage participants to slow down and look more carefully at their surroundings. Oakland’s Uptown neighborhood provided a wide variety of subjects, from historic buildings and modern architecture to street scenes and unexpected moments happening around us. As a photographer and instructor, I enjoy helping people recognize that interesting photographs can often be found close to home when they begin to see familiar locations in a new way.
A Photography Workshop for the Beginning Photographer
For a beginning photographer, learning how to use a camera is only one part of the process. Understanding composition, light, exposure, and visual storytelling can make a significant difference in the images you create. During the workshop, I worked individually with participants, discussing camera settings and offering guidance based on their experience level and the specific photographs they wanted to make.
Whether someone is new to digital photography or already comfortable using their camera, I believe hands-on experience is one of the best ways to learn. Being outside with a camera creates opportunities to ask questions, experiment with different settings, and immediately see how creative decisions affect the final image.
Discovering Oakland and the East Bay Through Photography
One of the unexpected highlights of the morning was watching a rehearsal by Bandaloops, an aerial ballet company whose performers work in suspension from ropes secured high on buildings. It was an exciting reminder that photography often rewards curiosity and observation. You never know what may become part of the visual experience when exploring Oakland with a camera.
I enjoy creating opportunities for photographers throughout Oakland and the East Bay to build confidence while learning in real-world situations. My approach to photographic education emphasizes personal instruction, practical experience, and the development of each photographer’s individual way of seeing.
Through a photography workshop like this one, my goal is to help every participant become more comfortable with their camera, more confident in their creative decisions, and more excited about the possibilities that exist when they take the time to explore the world through photography.
